Cold weather riding gear

I picked up some cold weather biking gear today off EBay. Florida weather has been real shitty the past week- it's been rainy, freezing, and windy. The past week it hasn't made it past the 50's, and I HAVE HAD IT.
I picked up some leg and arm warmers, which will not only help keep the wind out, but they have a fleece lining that will keep me warm. These items, along with a knit cap under my helmet, will keep me nice and toasty during some upcoming rides.

Happy New Year everyone!
I can only hope that 2010 is better than 2009...

2009 Recap:
January-divorce still dragging on...constant fighting with my ex wore me out over the holidays.
February- credit union started garnishing my wages- to the tune of $800 a month- for a boat payment I defaulted on thanks to my pending divorce and current separation. Fought this whole month to get it removed; to no avail..for a whole month they took this money out of my check.
March- filed for bankruptcy protection...this stopped the wage garnishment, and was the only way I could start over fresh.
April- more fighting, more arguing, more stress. Trying to convince my ex to sign the papers- she continued to threaten to take my pension, take EVERYTHING and leave me in the poorhouse.
May- busy month. Divorce was finalized, ex apologized and admitted it was all her fault, and I took the best trip of my life- mountain biking out west. I needed that trip.
June-October- pretty uneventful. Took a trip with my new found girlfriend to do more mountain biking, enjoyed my kids, the ex STILL couldn't let it go and fought with me over nonsense crap, and I finalized my bankruptcy. The chapters of my old life were coming to a close.
November- Getting a LOT better. This holiday season was not filled with a hospital visit from anxiety like last year's, and things went very smoothly.
December-
got even closer to my kids-my oldest is an awesome one for sure. Spent the holidays with them both-I couldn't ask for any more. I finally see things getting better....

THIS YEAR.....

I am planning another trip, this time with my gal, and we are going out west to do some mountain biking together. June 2010 is the date!
I want to stay active, healthy, and enjoy myself this year. I won't let anything get in my way or ruin my party. I have everything I need right now, a job, someone I care for, two beautiful kids, a roof over my head, some cash in the bank, my bike, my jetski, my health, my future.
I plan on traveling as much as possible, and hopefully everyone stays tuned to my blog for a lot more biking and skiing pics! HAPPY 2010 ALL!!

Boyette Ride-12/27/09

Had a great ride at Boyette today. I hit a good amount of trails: Upper and Lower Loch Ness, Randy's trail, Spider Berm (twice), Golf Cart, Abyss, and Canyon. Right at 11.5 miles. I wiped out on Lower Loch Ness...no idea how or why..lol. I was on a small downhill, and I think my tire hit something on the side of the trail, next thing I know I am landing flat on my face. Not good. A bruised ego, and not much else.

Gettin' lousy in Florida....

As of late, the weather down here has SUCKED. There has been a lot of rain for this time of year, and the days have been gloomy with little to no sunshine for the past 4-5 days. I was hoping to get one last ride in on the ski before the full force of winter came down, but thanks to the stinkin' rain last weekend, that foiled my plans.
I'm hoping to head out tomorrow to do some biking; right now the rain chance is holding at 40% for the whole weekend- BS. At least the temperature will be in the 70's, so even if it rains on me a bit, I won't freeze too much.
I hadn't posted anything in a while, so I figured I'd throw this up real quick to let you know I am still alive out here!

CROOM TRAIL REVIEW

I headed out today for my second ride at Croom, which is a pathway in the Withlacoochee State Forest in Hernando County off State Road 50. I had been out here one other time, and rode a section of trail referred to as the "yellow" trail system. All the trails in Croom are marked as red, blue, yellow and green trails, and the colors have nothing to do with their difficulty level. The yellow trail was unremarkable, and was full of sugar sand and spiderwebs due to lack of use when I rode it last.
I started out at Croom Rd. and the paved railway trail (better known as parking lot #2 on SWAMP maps). I rode down Croom road looking for the entrance to the blue pathway. I totally missed it, and ended up going on a side trail that was actually a HORSE trail..whoops. Talk about ROUGH. The sand was all sugar, and my legs were burning before I went about 2.5 miles an realized I messed up. I turned back and got back out onto Croom Rd., then found the trail proper. My first gripe: POOR SIGNAGE OFF THE MAIN ROADWAY.
SO I started on the proper blue bike path, and it seemed fine for a few miles. About the trail. Although there are areas of sugar sand, the entire trail is VERY loosely packed. So your tires will fight for grip the ENTIRE time you ride, which makes your speed less than superb when navigating these trails. The trails are very poorly maintained- overgrown in areas, tons of debris on the trail, and as you can see by the above pic, deeply rutted sugar sand throughout. I stayed in a high gear the entire time just to be able to maintain speed and pedal through the slop.
The trail is well marked by signs throughout, and I didn't have much of an issue staying on it. Word of advice- print out a map and take a GPS with you if it's your first time out here- YOU WILL GET LOST WITHOUT THEM!

I finally reached an area of the trail called "Drunken Monkey", which had some pretty nice downhills and climbs. Fun. Nothing like Alafia or Boyette though. The drops all ended in sharp turns or sudden stops- not very fun, since if you got ANY speed coming down off the hill, you had to brake like a madman at the bottom to navigate the turn. It just didn't flow well at all.

If this is all Croom has to offer, I say skip it. Granted, there are many mile of trails I did not check out yet, and there may be other areas that make this ride worthwhile. But here is the bottom line:
1) Trail is boring and unremarkable scenery wise
2) The sugar sand will drive you insane and greatly slow down your speed
3) The uphills are gradual and the downhills are few and far between, but it's a good cardio workout.
4) Drunken Monkey is OK, but do yourself a favor and ride the paved rail trail to the bypass and ride directly into Drunken Monkey, skip the rest of the blue trail prior to that- unless you're looking for a good leg workout.
5) There are some whoops and jumps, but because of the loose soil, you have to pedal like a crazy person to get any speed up to catch air and have fun...it's not worth it, in my opinion.
6) If this is close to you, then it's worthy of a trip. But if it's the same distance to Wilderness Park/ Flatwoods and/or Alafia/ Boyette, stick with those rides. The trails are in better shape, there are less bugs and crap in the trail to navigate around.

Oh, a hardtail on this trail will kick you ass. The trail is very uneven, and with the bumps, sand, roots and debris, you will certainly develop a hemorrhoid riding the trail with a HT. The FS will be a lot easier on your back and ass...lol.

I mention bugs because on this jaunt I did 18.67 miles, and I swallowed 3 small flying insects, got hit in the face and upper body by huge locusts more than I can count, clotheslined 2 spider webs with BIG spiders in them, and picked up a ton of hitchikers. Nice.

Two new videos-Balm/Boyette MTB ride in Riverview, FL.

Had a sweeet ride today at Boyette. NO ONE was there. Had the place all to myself. The only disadvantage? No one had cleared the debris and spidewebs from the trails. I hit a gnarly web with a MASSIVE spider in it, and the thing was crawling on me. Friggin' nasty.
On the Spider Berm trail video, a large tree fell over from the recent winds, and was blocking the path (about a minute into the vid).
